My favourite line is not in the book, but on the blurb on the back of my copy: Astonishing in their variety and power, these stories display both the artistry of a great writer at the height of her powers and the humanity of a mature artist facing the world with her gift of wonder still intact. This is what I would have liked to write as a book review, but I believe it would be considered plagiarism, These words describe it best, but you can only truly experience the book by reading it. Deutsch: Meine Lieblingszeile steht nicht im Buch, sondern auf dem Klappentext auf der Rückseite meines Exemplars: Erstaunlich in ihrer Vielfalt und Kraft, zeigen diese Geschichten sowohl die Kunstfertigkeit einer großen Schriftstellerin auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Kräfte als auch die Menschlichkeit einer reifen Künstlerin, die der Welt mit ihrer noch intakten Gabe des Staunens gegenübersteht. Das hätte ich gerne als Buchbesprechung geschrieben, aber ich glaube, das würde als Plagiat angesehen werden. Diese Worte beschreiben es am besten, aber man kann das Buch nur wirklich erleben, wenn man es liest.

This book is a masterpiece, sorry to start with a bomb, but nothing else describes it better than those five words. Each of these stories is beautiful on it's own, but when put together they complement each other so well, each describing problems and emotions we feel or live through, for example Newton's Sleep, it shows the earth that has to deal with the consequences of using fossil fuels, The Rock that changed things could be interpreted as gender or racial inequality and The Kerastion, shows how cruel the caste system can be, not allowing people to touch people of another cast. Other stories deal with simpler things like emotions, A Fisherman of the Inland Sea (it's a story in the book) deals with nostalgia and lost love. I have talked about all the stories themselves, but the thing that makes this book truly a masterpiece is the prose, the writing makes you feel every sorrow and every joy. In my eyes a great book is a book that every time you read it again you find more plots, more subtleties, and this book definitely gives you the full ride on those criteria.

Dieses Buch ist ein Meisterwerk. Es tut mir leid, dass ich mit einer Bombe anfange, aber nichts anderes beschreibt es besser als diese fünf Worte. Jede dieser Geschichten ist für sich genommen wunderschön, aber zusammengenommen ergänzen sie sich so gut, denn jede beschreibt Probleme und Emotionen, die wir empfinden oder durchleben. Newtons Schlaf zum Beispiel zeigt die Erde, die sich mit den Folgen der Nutzung fossiler Brennstoffe auseinandersetzen muss, Der Felsen der die Dinge verändert hat, könnte als Geschlechter- oder Rassenungleichheit interpretiert werden, und Die Kerastion, die zeigt, wie grausam das Kastensystem sein kann, das Menschen nicht erlaubt, Menschen einer anderen Kaste zu berühren. Andere Geschichten befassen sich mit einfacheren Dingen wie Emotionen, Ein Fischer der Binnensee (das ist eine Geschichte im Buch) handelt von Nostalgie und verlorener Liebe. Ich habe über die Geschichten selbst gesprochen, aber was dieses Buch wirklich zu einem Meisterwerk macht, ist die Prosa, die einen jeden Kummer und jede Freude spüren lässt. In meinen Worten ist ein grossartiges Buch ein Buch, bei dem man jedes Mal, wenn man es wieder liest, mehr Handlungen, mehr Feinheiten findet, und dieses Buch erfüllt definitiv alle diese Kriterien.
